Day 1. Camel Farm, Kata Tjuta (Olgas), Olga Gorge, Uluru (Ayers Rock) at Sunset
Depart Alice Springs and travel through the MacDonnell and James Ranges. Take a short stop at Noel Fullerton's Camel Farm then continue past the huge cattle stations of Mt. Ebenezer and Curtin Springs. View the Mt Conner mesa in the distance before arriving at Ayers Rock Resort. This afternoon, drive out to the magnificent domes of Kata Tjuta, where the cluster of 36 dramatic rock formations dominates the western skyline of the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. Take a walk into majestic Olga Gorge, where some of the plants are so rare that they are only found in and around these distinct sandstone monoliths. It is believed that at one time the domes may have been a single sedimentary rock many times the size of Uluru, but wind and rain over millions of years have shaped the domes that stand today. Late in the afternoon, travel to Uluru and enjoy a glass of wine while watching a brilliant display of colour on Uluru as the light of the day slowly fades.
Accommodation: Ayers Rock Resort, choice of hotel.
Day 2. Uluru at Sunrise, Mala Walk, Mutitjulu Waterhole, Kantju Gorge
Shortly before sunrise, enter Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park and proceed to Uluru. Over tea, coffee or champagne, watch as the sun's first rays creep over the desert sands and wash Uluru in stunning colours. In the pleasant morning air, take a guided walk to Mutitjulu waterhole to view ancient rock paintings and hear the legends of Kuniya Tjukurpa (Python Dreaming). This portion of touring may be substituted with an Uluru climb. The climb to the summit of Uluru does require a good degree of fitness and head for heights, but rewards you with a unique 360 degree view of the desert expanse. You can also see the giant domes of Kata Tjuta in the distance. Join the guided Mala Walk and learn about the geology and flora of the area, and of the fragility of the region as a whole, and the work being done to preserve it. View rock paintings, visit sacred Kantju Gorge and learn of Anangu Aboriginal traditions. Tour the base of Uluru and stop by the Cultural Centre and Manuku Arts and Craft Cooperative before transferring to the airport.
