Day 1. Kata Tjuta (Olgas), Olga Gorge, Sunset Drinks, Ayers Rock Resort
Depart Alice Springs bound for Ayers Rock Resort. Travel through the rugged MacDonnell and James Ranges stopping at Noel Fullerton's Camel Farm where you have the opportunity to ride a camel (own expense). Back aboard the coach, continue through scenic desert landscapes, stopping to view the intriguing flat-topped Mt Conner before arriving at Ayers Rock Resort. Early in the afternoon, join a tour to Kata Tjuta, a curious formation of 36 giant rocky domes, twisting valleys and creek beds. Walk into Olga Gorge and keep an eye out for ancient petroglyphs (stone carvings). This remarkable formation of sandstone domes supports a vast array of plant life, some of which so rare that it is found nowhere else on earth. As the sun starts to sink in the desert sky, travel to sunset strip at Uluru (Ayers Rock). On arrival, relax and enjoy a complimentary glass of wine and watch the play of light and colour as the golden rays of the setting sun strike the surface of the great monolith.
Accommodation: Ayers Rock Resort, choice of hotel.
Day 2. Uluru at Sunrise, Guided Mala Walk, Mutitjulu Waterhole, Alice Springs
First thing this morning, return to Uluru to watch the second act of the famous Uluru light show, this time from its eastern side at sunrise. As the sun's rays start peeping over the horizon, enjoy a tea, coffee or champagne whilst watching the shaded sleeping monolith brought to life in an inspiring display of dancing light and colour. With the sun now charting its course across the sky, take a guided walk to the beautiful Mutitjulu waterhole, viewing ancient rock paintings and hearing stories of traditional Aboriginal legends. The more energetic may substitute this portion of touring to take the spectacularly scenic climb to the summit Uluru. Later in the day, join the guided Mala Walk around the base of Uluru to learn about the geology and flora of the region. Visit Kantju Gorge, a sacred waterhole and ancient hunting ground, then travel to the Cultural Centre and Maruku Arts and Craft Cooperative to see Aboriginal artists at work. There's also the opportunity to buy original pieces of art. Depart Ayers Rock for the return journey to Alice Springs, arriving around 7.00 p.m.
